Bonn wins BBL crime thriller in Munich

The Telekom Baskets Bonn won the top game in the Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) at FC Bayern with 77:73 (39:36) and increased the worries of the runners-up. After an ultimately unsuccessful race to catch up in the last quarter, it was the third competitive defeat in a row for Bayern Munich.

The Bavarians around their top scorer Isaac Bonga (28 points) were constantly behind in the Audi Dome and were a good four minutes before the end with ten points behind (63:73), but came close again with a 9:0 run. Karsten Tadda made everything clear for Bonn in the hot phase with two converted free throws. The guests’ best pitcher was TJ Shorts (26 points).

Munich, who lost the first leg in Bonn in December and lost twice in the EuroLeague in Spain during the week, remain third with 13 wins and five losses. The Telekom Baskets (16:2) are right in front of them and remain leaders Alba Berlin (16:1) on their heels.

After the sobering EuroLeague week, Alba stayed the course, at least in the Bundesliga. The double winner got a mandatory victory in the hard-fought 94:86 (40:34) at the MLP Academics and consolidated his lead in the table. For Berlin, which suffered clear defeats on the European stage on Wednesday and Friday, New Zealand’s Yanni Wetzell was the best thrower with 20 points.

Meanwhile, tail light medi Bayreuth is waiting for the hoped-for turnaround after the change of coach. In the first game under the leadership of Mladen Drijencic, the relegation candidate ratiopharm Ulm lost 64:80 (33:48) on Sunday.

Drijencic, who led EWE Baskets Oldenburg to cup victory in 2015, was hired to succeed Lars Masell on Thursday and saw the team lose its 15th in its 18th game of the season on its debut. The Löwen Braunschweig (73:89 against the Syntainics MBC Weißenfels) and the Fraport Skyliners Frankfurt (81:96 at the MHP giants Ludwigsburg) also lost in the table basement.
