Mönchengladbach (dpa) – Ex-world champion Rainer Bonhof currently does not believe that Germany will win the title at the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year.
“I’m not convinced yet,” said the 1974 world champion in an interview with the “Rheinische Post”. “I think a lot of Hansi Flick, but he has to make the team a real team. That wasn’t the case at the 2018 World Cup, which is why he was eliminated early.”
The current vice-president of Borussia Mönchengladbach, who turns 70 this Tuesday, was assistant coach of the national team under national coach Berti Vogts in the 1990s. Together with his old friend from playing together at Borussia, Bonhof won the European Championship title in 1996.
Bonhof sees German football on the right track, but would like the young players to think less about their careers. “We have a lot of good talent. I’m just thinking of Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen. But the young players have a duty to give back some of what is invested in them. I often miss that, both in the clubs and at the national team,” said Bonhof.
