Bones and all: Timothée Chalamet upsets Venice 79

LLuca Guadagnino leads to Venice Film Festival one of his more films successful, disturbing, exciting and divisive. Bones and Allin competition, tells of the cannibalism of two young people and theirs loveOf their road trip to find a place in the world (Is love made for monsters? One wonders in the film) and come to terms with one’s past.

Guadagnino dares: joins the horror of Suspiria to sentimentality of Call me by my name banging us in the face bloodmeals of human flesh (Bone and All refers to the “complete meal” of a body) and one love story between a bewildered eighteen year old (Taylor Russell) and a lonely wanderer (Timothée Chalamet). Together they try to believe that a “real” life for different them is possible.

Bones and All: the plot

We are in the 80s. Marven (the talented Russell) is 18 years old, she lives in Maryland with her father, a man who keeps her under lock and key, but he is not the classic master father, in reality he has good reasons to act like this: the daughter since the age of three years he has enjoyed eating human flesh (his first victim was the babysitter). Marven is still in the grip of this urge which forces the two to wander from one place to another. One day the girl is alone, without her father who has decided to abandon her to her fate. She left her a cassette tape with her voice recording and her birth certificate with her mother’s name on it.

Since that time Marven begins a journey in search of his roots. Crossing various states (from Maryland to Kentucky to Missouri) he meets the old man Sully (Mark Rylance), who smelled her from a distance, and the young Lee (Chalamet), a pink-haired wanderer who escaped from his family and also a cannibal. Marven believed he was the only one to suffer from that pathology and instead…. Together they continue the journey, one becomes the mirror of the otheryes fall in love and eat bodies.

But is that the life they are destined for or can they be able to change things? They seem to be in a prison from which it is impossible to get out. Marven fights for her to live differently, and it will be love for herself and for those who love to drive it.

Love until the last bite

Marven and Lee they look like vampires let me inwe are not faced with a genre film aimed at teenagers at the Twilight. We are from quite other places. Guadagnino is inspired by the novel of the same name by Camille DeAngelis for his oozing film blood, restlessness, moments disturbing (when the protagonists look for theirs as predators victims), but also feelings, sense of guilt And love overwhelming that exceeds the senses, which manifests itself slowly and sublimates itself in horror. Bones and All it frightens, worries and even makes you cry.

Cannibalism as a metaphor to tell about diversity

Bones and All tells us through the metaphor of cannibalism the marginalization of a minority, of the different. “I think there is in each of us the fear of finding the other in its otherness, which has as much to do with the diversity that belongs, for example, to the fundamental struggles for civil rights, as with the fear that we fail to understand because far from us – he argues Guadagnino – I hope that the film can lead us to better understand this condition through the journey of the two protagonists ».
