Brazilian police on Sunday used tear gas to disperse hundreds of supporters of right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro who gathered around the parliament building in the capital Brasilia.
The area was cordoned off by the authorities, but the ‘bolsonarists’ broke through the security cordons anyway. A few even successfully climbed the building to reach the roof.
According to a photographer from the AFP news agency, the scenes were reminiscent of the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Bolsonaro supporters are asserting themselves in Brasilia for not accepting the swearing in of leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva a week ago. Bolsonaro himself has hardly spoken since he lost the elections in October. He did not congratulate the winner and never said that he recognized the result. He has been living in the US state of Florida since December 30.
