Bologna-Sassuolo 4-2: comeback victory with Fabbian, Ferguson and Saelemaekers

Heart and courage. Desire to win and ability to always push yourself up. Bologna won 4-2 in a pyrotechnic match against Sassuolo who played well for 70 minutes but then succumbed to the home team’s attacks, giving up completely in the final minutes. Thiago Motta’s team (in the stands due to disqualification) thus brings home their first success of 2024 and finds themselves in fifth place, getting back on track on the road that leads to Europe. The neroverdi, however, lose the sixth match out of six without Berardi this season and are increasingly embroiled in the quicksand of the relegation zone. Yet the neroverdi went ahead twice (first with Thorstvedt and then with Volpato) but were always caught and ultimately defeated.

Bologna starts again without Orsolini, as at San Siro against Milan: Thiago Motta (in the stands due to suspension, in his place is deputy Alexandre Hugeux) prefers to start with Fabbian on the right and Urbanski on the left, with only Zirkzee in front. On the other hand, Dionisi, still without Berardi, leaves Boloca on the bench and presents himself with Thorstvedt and Lipani in front of the defense. Sassuolo’s start is surprising: high pressing and breathtaking intensity that prevents Bologna from building from the bottom with serenity. An error by Skorupski in the 13th minute gives Thorstvedt a ball that the Norwegian cannot miss. The match was pleasant, the two teams played openly and a masterpiece from Volpato (great left-footed shot) put Sassuolo back in front in the 34th minute: it was the first goal in a black and green jersey for the talent from the Roma school.

In the second half the home team increased the pace, but Sassuolo did not allow themselves to be crushed. Then Bologna changes the flanks: Orsolini on the right and Saelemaekers on the left and the game changes completely. The rossoblù reached the equalizer in the 73rd minute with Fabbian, who was able to head Kristiansen’s kissed cross from the left. From then on it was a monologue from Thiago Motta’s team: Ferguson’s goal (surgical diagonal) in the 83rd minute sent Sassuolo to the ground, stunned four minutes later by Saelemaekers, who with his entry shifted the balance and sent Bologna into ecstasy.
