Boxing champions can be admired in Oostzaan for the second time next week. Friends Mario Walda and Gilbert Hallie are organizing a boxing gala in the sports hall on the Twiskeweg. The Dutch selection will compete against Scotland there and the program around it features both professional and amateur matches.
Gilbert Hallie looks at his phone a bit more than usual these days. He is in constant contact with boxers and their intermediaries. On Tuesday morning he gives boxing lessons to the so-called Old Stars, a predominantly older group that meets every week to work on their fitness. After practice, Hallie opens the phone again. “Annoying, someone is canceling.” That will be looking for a replacement. This is not the first time, occasionally someone gets injured. “Yes, we don’t play marbles, do we.”
“I’ve been working on it since November,” laughs the organizer. In 2019 he put on a gala with the Dutch selection that boxed against Germany. “I have to match something after that first successful gala. I have talked everything together and I think it will be nice. It will really be a champion ball.”

Ger Brandt fights fanatically with the group. While taking a breather, he says that he will also watch the gala on April 21. “I’m going there with my grandson, who also likes it. He is not very involved in sports, so I think ‘I’ll take him with me’.” Will he be able to do it soon? “Well… no. We’re still short of something!”
Next year
Hallie is nevertheless proud of the Old Stars. “In the beginning we took it easy, but now they can complete an entire boxing training.” Like Brandt, many members of the group come to watch the gala. Hallie is really looking forward to it and is even looking ahead: “There are already plans for next year. We are already thinking!”
