Police have released video footage of the brutal assault on 82-year-old Paul Pelosi, the husband of ex-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. The video shows how the burglar attacks Pelosi with a hammer.

The burglar, 42-year-old David DePape, was looking for Nancy Pelosi to hold her hostage at the end of October last year. Paul’s wife was not home when the burglar broke into the Pelosi family’s San Francisco home. Paul was surprised in his sleep, but managed to warn the police before the burglar attacked him.
Footage released by police today shows officers approaching Paul and Nancy’s home. Paul opens the door and stands next to the burglar. Both men keep their hands on the hammer, but then the burglar suddenly breaks free. He then attacks Paul with the hammer. They fall to the ground, after which the police try to stop the attacker.
Paul had to be hospitalized after the brutal attack and underwent brain surgery. He is now working on his recovery.
DePape, who was in the country illegally, has been charged with attempted murder and kidnapping, burglary and threatening a public figure. The Canadian risks a prison sentence of several years to life. DePape himself denies guilt.
