Body found in Oostkamp: three-year-old disappearance case solved

On Friday morning, April 5, 2019, 53-year-old Nico Ros cycled away from his home in Lievegem. Nico was last seen by a witness around 10:00 am that day, on a bicycle near his home.

That same day Nico’s bicycle was noticed by an inland skipper on the Ghent-Bruges canal, who immediately reported this to the police. The bicycle was located along the Legeweg in Beernem, between the canal and the towpath. “This place is not easy to reach and the bicycle was virtually undamaged. It is possible that the bicycle was left there,” the police said. An extensive search was carried out in and around the channel, unfortunately without result.

“Discovered purely by accident”

Since then, there has been no trace of Nico, until last Wednesday a hiker found his remains in a forest on the Leiemeersen in Moerbrugge, a sub-municipality of Oostkamp. “The body was discovered purely by chance by a hiker,” confirmed Alain Remue, head of the Missing Persons Cell.

“The place is located a few kilometers from the towpath where his bicycle was found at the time. Everything points to an act of desperation.” A law doctor has been appointed, and the investigation is ongoing, the prosecutor’s office confirms.

The disappearance case also made it to the VTM program Faroek, but without result. View the file on the case below.
