Body found in IJsselmeer, unclear whether it is missing man who has been thrown overboard

A body was found in the IJsselmeer tonight, the National Unit police told NH. It may be the man who was knocked overboard yesterday afternoon on the IJsselmeer between Enkhuizen and Andijk.

The police spent all day searching with sonar equipment for the man who fell overboard on the IJsselmeer yesterday afternoon. “We have been searching all day,” said the police. Sonar equipment can be used to determine whether people are present by means of sound waves under water. It is not known whether this technique actually led to this discovery.

Sailing yacht

The man went overboard around 2.30 pm yesterday, because the boom of the sailing yacht hit the person on board. The sailor then disappeared under water and did not resurface. Someone on the boat immediately jumped into the water in the hope of finding the man. But that proved impossible.

The Coast Guard was immediately called in. Other security services, such as the police, also became directly involved in the search.

Uncertainty

According to the Koninklijke Nederlandse Rescue Maatschappij, it was in all probability already assumed that the person on board had died.

Whether the found body indeed belongs to the man in question, the police cannot say for the time being. “That identification will take place as soon as possible. When it is completed, it can be indicated whether it is indeed the missing man.”
