The body found on Friday morning in the Dender in Aalst is that of Danny Van Goethem, the man who killed Miren and Michiel in Denderhoutem. The East Flanders public prosecutor’s office said this. This also concludes the investigation into the double murder.
It was Friday morning around 11:30 am that several people saw a body floating on the water in the Dender in Aalst. At the station, the body was tied to the side by the emergency services and the investigation was started. It was immediately thought that it was the body of Danny Van Goethem, after the double murder in Denderhoutem he jumped into the Dender, according to witnesses. A suicide note was also left with his son. The body surfaced almost two weeks after the facts. On Sunday the redeeming news came that it was indeed Van Goethem. This became apparent after an autopsy that was carried out on Sunday. The public prosecutor’s office also announced that the investigation into the murder can be closed as a result.
The facts took place on November 11 in the Borrekent in Denderhoutem. Miren Eynatten and her son Michiel were then killed by Danny Van Goethem. He received a restraining order a few hours before the murder and was also arrested by the police and the public prosecutor’s office. But they let the man go again, because according to the public prosecutor’s office there was no reason to detain the man and also no danger. The man was dropped off by the police, not at the house, but at another location. From there he left for Miren and Michiel’s home and killed them with several stab wounds. Then he went on the run, so he jumped into the water in Aalst. So two weeks later his body was found. Michiel’s dad responds briefly. “I am very relieved that it is over and that we have been spared a long process,” says Christophe. “We can now start processing the whole thing further.”
Yesterday Michiel and Miren were said goodbye at the crematorium in Aalst. The family had no confirmation at the time, but hoped that it would be Danny Van Goethem.
