BOGOTAThe bodies of two young men were found in the landing gear of an airplane in the Colombian capital Bogota. The police suspect that the men came from the Dominican Republic.
The bodies were found when the Avianca airliner was being checked for regular maintenance in Bogota, the airline and Colombia’s attorney general’s office said on Saturday. The bodies were frozen and one had burns.
“On arrival at El Dorado Airport in Bogota, airline personnel discovered the bodies of two stowaways in the aircraft’s landing gear on Friday evening,” Avianca said in a statement.
No identification papers
Avianca expressed her condolences to the families of the two men, whose ages are estimated to be between 15 and 20 years old. Although no identification papers were found on the bodies, one of the men had Dominican Republic currency in his pocket. In addition, a suitcase found with the men contained papers from that country.
According to the authorities, this would mean that the men had been in the landing gear since January 3, because the aircraft was the last in the Dominican Republic at that time. The plane last received regular maintenance on December 27 and has since flown to Guarulhos in Brazil and Bogota, among others, the airline said.
