Bochum will be Heintz’s fifth Bundesliga club – loan from Union Berlin perfect

186 games in the House of Lords

What was indicated on Wednesday is now official. Dominique Heintz leaves 1. FC Union Berlin after six months and strengthens the defense of VfL Bochum. The Bundesliga competitor takes the 28-year-old central defender to North Rhine-Westphalia for a season on loan, after which the contract in the capital runs until 2024.

“Dominique Heintz is a Bundesliga player with quality. He will strengthen our central defence, as a left-footed player he fits the requirements profile perfectly: experienced at Bundesliga level, tall, robust, strong in one-on-one battles, a leader. Dominique understands the challenges the team faces and he is ready to face them and move forward. He’s in the rhythm of training so that the adjustment period runs as smoothly as possible,” said VfL Managing Director Sebastian Schindzielorz.

Heintz made a total of 186 appearances in the top flight for 1.FC Kaiserslautern, 1.FC Köln, SC Freiburg and Union, but was recently no longer a seed for the “Iron”. In Bochum, the competition is smaller after the departures of Armel Bella-Kotchap (20; Southampton) and Maxim Leitsch (24; Mainz 05). With Ivan Ordets (30; Dinamo Moscow), Bochum have only presented a new man for the center of defence. With Erhan Masovic (23) and Vasilios Lampropoulos (32), coach Thomas Reis has two more established options, plus the talents Tim Oermann (18) and Mohammed Tolba (18).

“I’m very happy that the move to VfL worked out,” said Heintz. “Bochum has worked hard for me and I hope that I can do my part to ensure that VfL stays in the Bundesliga. I know the fight to stay up in the league from my previous stations, in Kaiserslautern, Cologne, Freiburg and also at Union that was often enough the goal of the season. VfL is a traditional club, the stadium is in the middle of the city, nice and narrow, with a good atmosphere and enthusiastic fans – I like that. The last time I wore a blue and white jersey was for my home club SV Herta Kirrweiler, that was a while ago.”
