Bundesliga club VfL Bochum mourns the loss of its former player Andrzej Iwan. As the Polish Football Association announced, the 1982 World Cup bronze medalist died at the age of 63.
Iwan played 29 games for Poland’s national team (11 goals), and it was thanks to him that Bochum reached the final of the 1988 DFB Cup.
Iwan scored against Hamburger SV in the semifinals to make it 2-0, and VfL later lost to Eintracht Frankfurt in the final.
“His goal in the semi-finals of the 1988 DFB Cup will not be forgotten,” VfL wrote on Twitter on Wednesday: “Our thoughts are with Andrzej’s family and friends! Rest in peace!”
In the Polish league, Ivan was champion four times, scoring 90 goals in 269 games.
