Bob Jungels successfully completes 50 kilometers solo in the Tour de France | cycling

The peloton started with nine riders less than had finished on Saturday. Guillaume Martin no longer resigned “as a result of the enforcement of the Covid-19 protocol”, while Kasper Asgreen and Ruben Guerreiro were also not fit enough to continue the course.

After a long fight to get into the break, 21 men drove away in drawers. Green jersey carrier Wout van Aert was one of them and Rigoberto Uran was also there. The number two of the 2017 Tour de France was three minutes and 24 seconds behind Tadej Pogacar before the start of the stage, so the group did not get a lot of space from the peloton.

Jungels goes solo

On Col de le Croix the leading group was separated. It was Bob Jungels who single-handedly took a lead on a thinned out group of pursuers. A little later he was joined by Simon Geschke. The German was just in time to grab the mountain points, virtually driving Magnus Cort Nielson out of the mountain jersey. In the descent, however, Geschke lost contact with the Luxembourger, who had to pull off a solo of more than 50 kilometers for the victory.

On the long Pas de Morgins Jungels kept on bravely, but Thibaut Pinot counterattacked from the group of pursuers. This while in the group favorites Daniel Martinez ran into problems. Moments later, Aleksandr Vlasov also had to release.

Jungels was twenty seconds ahead of Pinot at the top of Pas de Morgins, while Carlos Verona and Jonathan Castoviejo were again close behind. Jungels had to climb another four kilometers after a short descent towards the finish. He turned out to have classified that final climb better than his pursuers. He thus gave the troubled AG2R-Citroën its twentieth stage victory in team history.

Behind him, Castroviejo was second ahead of Verona and Pinot. Behind that, Pogacar had another great sprint. Only Vingegaard could follow the jersey wearer, but the rest lost a few seconds.

There will be no stage on Monday, the riders will get a well-deserved rest day. The Tour de France will resume on Tuesday.
