Around a month and a half after the end of his career, Kevin-Prince Boateng once again addressed the fans of his youth and heart club Hertha BSC with emotional words.
“I will always be here. I’m from Herthan. I love this club and I will always remain loyal to this club,” said Boateng on Saturday evening in the Olympic Stadium before Hertha’s second division duel against FC St. Pauli.
Boateng had matured into a professional footballer at the capital club and ended his career with the Berliners in August a few months after their Bundesliga relegation. “I grew up here. I became a professional here. You are always in my heart,” Boateng shouted into the microphone. Tens of thousands celebrated the 36-year-old with “Boateng” chants.
As Boateng stood in front of the packed east curve, he wiped tears from his eyes. Hertha managing director Tom Herrich said goodbye to the former offensive player with a long hug. “I said I wouldn’t get emotional. So don’t let me cry. Ha, Ho, He forever,” shouted Boateng and started a La Ola wave.
