BMW shares weaken: BMW buys battery material for Umicore’s US car factory in Canada – Umicore shares jump

BMW has won the Belgian company Umicore as a supplier for its battery production in North America.

Umicore will supply cathode-active battery materials to BMW battery cell supplier AESC in the United States from a new plant in Ontario, Canada, the carmaker said on Monday. This is an important step to strengthen BMW’s regional supply chains and ensure the ramp-up of e-mobility. AESC is currently setting up battery cell production in the US state of South Carolina near the BMW car factory in Spartanburg.

BMW purchasing director Joachim Post said: “We pursue a globally balanced procurement strategy in the three major geo-regions of the world.” BMW wants to buy components such as battery cells where the cars are built and also gradually localize the supply chain for raw materials.

VW (Volkswagen (VW) vz) and Umicore announced on Saturday that they would build a battery cathode factory in Poland. The aim is cheaper production that makes electric cars affordable.

BMW shares temporarily fell by 1.04 percent to 97.61 euros via XETRA. Umicore shares are now gaining 13.69 percent to 25.24 euros in Brussels.
