The BMW iX2 will also arrive in a single-engine and all-wheel drive eDrive20 configuration. That is to say the 100% electric variant of the renewed – or rather, revolutionized – SUV Coupé. It will arrive from March 2024 with its 204 HP, 250 Nm of torque, 170 km/h top speed, 8.6 seconds to cover 0-100 km/h and autonomy between 438 and 478 km. It will arrive, but in the meantime it was possible to get on board the best performing BMW iX2 xDrive30. Near Cascais, Portugal, we drove the battery-powered variant of what we can now consider a former crossover. It is the first time that we see an electric motor – sorry, we see two electric motors – in combination with the platform on which the iX2 rests, naturally shared with the endothermic X2 (here the test of the sportier M35i), as well as with the X1 and with the Mini Countryman. In short, if the technical base is consolidated and known, albeit new, the combined platform-power unit remains to be discovered. Prices for the BMW iX2 xDrive30 start from 60,000 euros round.

BMW iX2: how it is made, the design

If it is true that the X2 has reached – with the U10 – its second generation, the iX2 is making its first appearance. In any case, it fully reflects the stylistic canons of the endothermic and hybrid twins. Here, then, we find that “shark” design on the front with new LED light signature, double kidney grille – on the iX2 without a perforated grille since there is no radiator – and bumpers with angular shapes that suggest grit. Distinctive element of the iX2: the BMW badge is surrounded by a blue stripe, declaring its 100% electric engine. Pronounced miniskirts, handles flush with the bodywork, sculpted car body and rear characterized by a decidedly more inclined rear window than on the first generation X2 complete the aesthetic package on the outside, where compared to the previous generation the new X2 has changed the most.

BMW iX2: how it’s made, the technique

The BMW iX2 has two electric motors, one per axle, for a total power of 313 HP and 494 Nm of torque. The battery is from 64.8 kWh: to fully recharge it takes 6:30 hours at 11 kW in AC. Or 3:45 hours at 22 kW, always in AC with the three-phase charger. Only 29 minutes are needed to go from 10 to 80% of the charge with the superfast charging stations with charging power of up to 130 kW. In practice, in 10 minutes you can reach a range of 120 km. On the BMW iX2 xDrive30 the traction is all-wheel drive, the gearbox is absent (being an electric there is only the gear selector with the usual P, R, N and D) and the maximum speed is 180 km/h electronically limited. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes place in 5.6 seconds, while declared consumption is 6.1 km/kWh, for a declared autonomy included between 417 and 449 km.

BMW iX2: how it is made, the interior

On board the BMW iX2 you live in a comfortable and relaxed environment. There is plenty of space for the driver and passenger, but this does not mean less space for the occupants of the second row, who have been given more attention thanks to the 19 cm in length gained by the second generation X2 compared to the first. The interior is satisfactory, with little plastic and the presence of soft materials. Fromarmrest extension various functions of the car are controlled: from the audio volume to starting the engine through the selection of driving modes and gear. The steering wheel It has a sausage shape, the seats are comfortable and the soft structure contributes to relaxation while travelling. The space created for inductive charging of the phone is intelligent, with a practical rod capable of fixing the smartphone, preventing it from jolting while driving.

BMW iX2: how it’s made, the technology

The Curved Display combines the 10.25″ digital dashboard with the 10.7″ infotainment system: both take advantage of the new BMW OS 9 operating system, full of information and which deserves further study before driving to avoid spending too much time looking away from the asphalt. As with the X2 M35i, the iX2 also has a long list of driving assistants, fortunately some of which can be deactivated. Inside the package Adas frontal collision warning, cruise control with brake function, lane departure warning and parking assistance with rear camera should be noted. From the optional list you can draw and implement the adaptive cruise control with Start & Stop function and the Steering and Lane Control Assistant. Finally, the head-up display is optional, as is the remote activation of technological functions via the BMW ConnectedDrive Upgrades.

BMW iX2: how it goes

As was the case with the X2 M35i, having driven them a few hours apart, here too the comparison with the “other” is useful for framing, in this case, the iX2. It is clear that the letter M requires BMW to characterize the dynamic behavior of the endothermic sports car towards a clientele devoted more to sportiness than comfort. On the contrary, the iX2 proves to be an SUV Coupé definitely more devoted to comfort than to performance. Although the sprint is lightning fast (there is also the Boost mode for maximum power for 10 seconds), the suspension calibration and the behavior of the car between the bends are less sporty aspects than on the M35i. Good comfort, therefore, for the iX2: you travel comfortably, upright and, when you want it, with the thrill of convincing acceleration. It effortlessly smooths out rough terrain, be it cobblestones, artificial bumps or rough roads, better than the X2 M35i can do. Customizable, but this is no longer new, the power of regenerative braking.

BMW iX2: pros and cons

Below are the strengths and weaknesses found on the BMW iX2 during the international test near Cascais (Portugal).

  • design: revolutionized compared to the first generation, in person it has its charm, sporty and captivating;
  • shot: really convincing, the 494 Nm of instant torque are all felt;
  • choice: vast range of engines (petrol 300 HP, three-cylinder mild hybrid petrol 170 HP, diesel 150 HP and electric 204 and 313 HP).
  • visibility: the rear window is small and the rear-view mirrors are bulky;
  • brake pedal: hard, it is not always easy to modulate linear and fluid braking.
