David de Gea did not survive the selection of national coach Luis Enrique and is therefore missing from Spain at the World Cup in Qatar. A few days later, the goalkeeper received a message from the boss of the Spanish federation with a thank you for services rendered, while he has not left the national team at all.
De Gea has played 45 international matches for Spain so far and participated in one European Championship and World Cup. At Manchester United, the 32-year-old goalkeeper has been scrambled up under Erik ten Hag. National coach Luis Enrique left the goalkeeper at home despite his experience, without giving any reason. “It’s a technical decision,” said sports journalist Jose Alvarez El Chiringuito. Luis Enrique chooses Unai Simon, Robert Sanchez and David Raya.
A few days later, De Gea received a message from Luis Rubiales, the boss of the Spanish Football Federation. It says that he congratulates De Gea on his international career. “David, I’m glad you finally made the decision you’ve been thinking about for a while. I was told that you are quitting the national team,” Rubiales wrote.
‘Sorry?’
But the goalkeeper has never said that he will stop with the national team. “Sorry?” De Gea replied. “This is out of the question. Who told you that I am retiring? The coach has only said that he is not counting on me for this World Cup, but I have never announced my retirement and that is I don’t plan to either.”
Spain opens the World Cup against Costa Rica on Wednesday, November 23. Without David de Gea, who will have to watch the games at home from the bench.
