Bluetongue detected for the first time in Groningen: animal infected in Zevenhuizen

Bluetongue has been detected in Zevenhuizen, according to a map published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LNV).

It is the first case of bluetongue in the province of Groningen. In Drenthe, the disease has already been diagnosed in Havelte, Wapse, Beilen and near Meppel. The bluetongue epidemic started in September in the center of the country.

Bluetongue is a viral disease that mainly occurs in sheep. The animals become seriously ill: half do not survive the disease. Mosquitoes, so-called ‘midges’, transmit the virus.

The figures are most likely behind reality because it takes a while for the samples to be analyzed. Look at here the latest figures from the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality.
