Blue supermoon: when to see it and why it’s called that

comets, supernovae, shooting stars, eclipses: Space really reserves many beautiful surprises for astronomy enthusiasts and not, and will also do so at the end of August: the blue Supermoon is almost there now. In the sky of the 31st of this month, in fact, this fascinating spectacle will manifest itself in which two different scientific phenomena will overlap.

Blue supermoon, what will happen on August 31st

On this night the phenomenon will also be visible to the naked eye, but if the sky is cloudy, it will be possible admire the moon live streaming of The Virtual Telescope Project on Youtube. However, to understand what will happen on August 31st, the two phenomena that will come to cross giving rise to the blue supermoon must be explained.

Two astronomical events that coincide

With regard to the Supermoon, the event involves an apparent increase in the size of the Moon as seen from Earth. This will happen because the Full Moon this month coincides with the time when the distance (perigee) between the Earth and the Moon is shorter. Therefore, since the Moon is closest to the Earth, this will therefore appear slightly larger and brighter. But if the perigee and the apogee, the widest distance, occur in conjunction with the Full Moon, we speak respectively of Supermoon and Micromoon.

The Blue Moon won’t actually be blue

As for the blue moon, the denomination does not mean that the moon of this person will be seen, but it is the name that experts give to a specific phenomenon. For those who don’t know, if the number of months that make up a year is 12 and not 15 or 30, it is because of the Moon.

In every year, in fact, there are 12 full moons and therefore 12 lunar months. The lunar month, however, lasts a little less than the calendar month, about 29 and a half days. What happens that this gap leads to an extra full moon every 2.7 years and therefore to a year in which the full moon will occur twice in a month, instead of just once. 2023 is the year in which this phenomenon occurs. The first Full Moon occurred on August 1st and the second will be held on August 31st. The second full moon of the same month is called the blue moon.
