Blocked escape gates in Bochum – the game was in danger of being abandoned for a long time

There was a delay in the Bundesliga game between Bochum and Stuttgart on Saturday afternoon. The second half could not be started.

Curiosity in Bochum. After the half-time break, the restart of the Bundesliga game between VfL Bochum and VfB Stuttgart was delayed. Because fence flags in the Stuttgart curve blocked escape gates, referee Bastian Dankert initially refused to whistle the game again.

Despite several loudspeaker announcements, the banners were not initially taken down. For a long time it was unclear whether the game could continue at all. According to Sky reporter Jens Westen, abandoning the game was a realistic option. It was only after a good 50 minutes that the situation could be resolved and the game restarted

VfB coach Sebastian Hoeneß had previously persuaded the Swabians’ supporters to no avail. The teams returned to the field a quarter of an hour late to warm up. The VfB players ran to their fans and tried to influence them – initially without results. Meanwhile, the Bochum supporters sang “Ice-cold Bommerlunder” to keep warm. Referees and officials from both clubs discussed things on the field.

According to Sky, the fire department was also consulted to look for a solution to continue the game.
