Bloc Party is one of those bands that you secretly wrote off. Yes, the debut album Silent Alarm (2005) hit like a bomb and with Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys the band was included in the list of ‘Promising British’. But the two penultimate regular albums were a bit boring and the very last, god better, a live version of the debut. Not exactly a taste of creativity. But London’s indie rockers have taken inspiration from the ugly things in life and are now singing about corruption and power. Day Drinker combines the energy of punk with the melody of pop and is packed with vicious guitar riffs. Rising idle in fifth gear offers the rock song traps the choice: fight or dance. There’s a dogged energy floating around Alpha Games which is never turned into grim guitar raking one on one. The drive might as well be molded into a drum and bass intro or glam rock to which football stadiums can stomp (The Girls Are Fighting† It makes Bloc Party in 2022 sound inspired, maybe even frustrated and angry, especially angry, but never boring.
