Then we found out about Hoppus’ cancer and believed that the only way to make it clear was through music: We’ll get through this together.
Following the announcement of blink-182’s new album ONE MORE TIME…, Tom DeLonge has revealed that he was close to ending his career. He was almost ready, but when he found out about Mark Hoppus’ cancer, he thought he could only use music to make it clear: We’ll get through this together.
The video teaser that the band shared to announce the album features an intimate conversation with Zane Lowe. And in this, the band’s singer and guitarist says thoughtfully: “I remember saying to my wife: I don’t think I’ll ever make music again. I don’t think I’ll ever tour again… Until Mark told me he was sick, and then I thought: That’s the only thing I wanted to do.”
He further explains: “When he [ Hoppus] “Telling me he was sick was the worst…nothing really matters.”
In June 2021, the bassist and singer Mark Hoppus made his cancer public. The diagnosis at the time was “stage four diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.” It is the same type of cancer that his mother suffered from in the past. This was able to successfully defeat the disease. Hoppus himself described his diagnosis at this point with the words: “My blood is trying to kill me.” In fact, the subsequent chemotherapy would have destroyed his vocal cords.
Tom DeLonge wanted to do something about the disease and explains in the interview: “It wasn’t about fame or money or how big Blink is or anything, it was like, ‘You’re going to get through this shit and we’re going to dominate.'” And that’s how it happened, that DeLonge didn’t give up his music career after all.
DeLonge has only been part of the band again since 2022 after they previously went their separate ways due to some disagreements. Now blink-182 has announced their new album with a teaser for an upcoming interview. In the four-minute teaser, the band talks about their development since DeLonge’s return and shares further inside information about the band’s structure.
