Bleached eyebrows: from Madonna to Oriana Sabatini

In life and in fashion, everything comes back. The bleached, white, and almost non-existent eyebrows are yet another proof of that. Booming in the late ’90s and early 2000s, in recent times celebrities from all over the world have brought them back to the scene. And so, what started as a showy gesture on the catwalks, eventually moved to the urban scene. But not everyone can get away with wearing this trend. Here are expert tips for wearing them in style.

THE PIONEERS. In this second round, bleached eyebrows were first seen in campaigns like Versace or Alexander Wang. And for them, models like Gigi and Bella Hadid and Lila Moss (in the case of Versace) and Kaia Gerber, the daughter of Cindy Crawford. (in the case of Wang), they were in charge of assuming the trend and showing the world their almost eyebrowless faces.

The next step of impact came from the hand of Kendall Jenner, who surprised everyone with her invisible eyebrows at the Met Gala 2022. She accompanied them with a mesh dress and black transparencies by Prada, as well as intense makeup, in search of of contrast. “When using this trend, the ideal is to give prominence to the eyes, applying good makeup to the eyelashes and contours. You can also focus on the mouth. If not, having a clean face and no eyebrows, the sensation may be that of being a little emaciated”, points out makeup artist Mabby Autino, who adds that it is vital to work well on the skin so that it looks radiant, highlighting the face with techniques such as the contouring.

Since then, the web has been populated with YouTube and TikTok tutorials on how to achieve this look, both in relation to bleaching and the makeup that goes with it. For Mabby, one of the strongest points to keep in mind is that they look good on people with prominent eyes: that they are big, slanted and defined. With these characteristics it is possible to offer the transgressive pose that this look seems to seek. Those with droopy eyelids and smaller eyes may not benefit as much.

Other figures that have joined this movement have been Madonna (who had already worn this style in 1992), Lady Gaga, Maisie Williams, Julia Fox and Lizzo. Among the Argentines who have adopted it, stand out Nathy Peluso and Oriana Sabatini.

NECESSARY CARE. Like all beauty trends, this one also has its pros and cons in relation to body care. According to Autino, bleaching maintenance should be done every 10 or 15 days, since hair grows continuously. This constant treatment can damage the area and cause it to weaken and stop growing so strongly.

The skin of the eyelids is the thinnest and most sensitive of our body, and therefore the most reactive and white of eczema, flaking, skin eruptions, redness or itching. For this reason, the skin specialist, Belén Hirigoity, recommends carefully evaluating the components of the products to avoid allergies, and even doing a skin test 48 or 24 hours before, applying it to a clean area behind the ear or on the wrist. “The procedure will be safer if it is performed in centers that offer professional products and are familiar with the components for each skin, exposure times, and application techniques to avoid adverse effects,” suggests the professional.

In addition, aftercare is also key: although it is often not visible, after the procedure, after having lost its most superficial layer, the skin will be exposed to a certain degree of inflammation. “The use of moisturizing and repairing products is very necessary, as well as avoiding direct exposure to the sun and using sun protection factor 50 to avoid hyperpigmentation of the skin surrounding the eyebrows”, Hirigoity points out.

Perhaps at first it is best to resort to makeup to see if it suits us. How? Applying a very clear base, concealer for dark circles and golden shadow. “The effect is the same,” promises Autino.
