The first ‘black weekend’ of this summer on European roads has gradually started. Mobility club VAB already has 640 kilometers of traffic jams in France on Friday afternoon. The delays could already “compete with red Saturdays”, the company said in a press release.
To the south, the route via Luxembourg to Lyon and the Spanish border has already been delayed by 1 hour and 54 minutes by VAB. On the A7 from Lyon to Orange there is a waiting time of 52 minutes. On the Lille – Paris – Bordeaux – Spain route, the delay is even longer: a total delay of 3 hours and 4 minutes. On the A10 from Paris to Bordeaux, the waiting time is up to 1 hour 8 minutes.
Germany is not spared either. On the A8 motorway between Karlsruhe and Ulm you already have to count on 2 hours 41 minutes. On the A7 between Hamburg and Flensburg there is a waiting time of 1 hour 3 minutes.
In Switzerland, the waiting times at the Gotthard tunnel fluctuate around the hour. Towards the south (Basel – Chiasso) it amounts to 1 hour 9 minutes. In the opposite direction (Chiasso – Basel) there is a delay of 2 hours and 4 minutes.
Monster traffic jams on all European holiday roads this weekend
Earlier this week, mobility organization Touring made a prediction for this weekend’s “monster traffic jams” on European roads. In summary, the highways will be congested in France, Spain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Spain, both south and north.
It will also be busy on the Belgian roads, especially on Friday and Saturday morning. On Sunday evening there is a risk of traffic jams towards the interior.
According to Touring, those who want to avoid the traffic to some extent should leave on Monday and return on a Friday or Monday. According to VAB, Sunday morning is the best time to leave.
