Björk has released the official artwork of their tenth studio album FOSSORA and at the same time announced the first preview “Atopos”. The full-length player is scheduled to be released this fall via “One Little Independent Records”, an exact release date is not yet known. Regarding the single, the Icelandic artist captioned the photo on Instagram with the words “coming soon”.
Forest spirit Bjork
On the cover of her soon to be released record, the singer can be seen in a light green suit – the British daily newspaper “The Guardian” describes the 56-year-old quite accurately as a “glowing forest spirit”. The musician is surrounded by magical, mushroom-like beings.
Two pieces are dedicated to her late mother
Two tracks on her new album – “Sorrowful Soil” and “Ancestress” – are a tribute to her mother: Hildur Rúna Hauksdóttir died in 2018 at the age of 72. Björk told the Guardian: “I don’t think my brother and I were ready for that … we thought she had 10 more years.” She continued, “So we said, ‘Come on,’ and got her to fight and … and it was like she had an internal clock inside her and she was just ready to go.”
FOSSORA is also known to feature features with experimental gospel and R’n’B musician Serpentwithfeet and Indonesian electro duo Gabber Modus Operandi. Her son Sindri and her daughter Doa should also be heard.
First a shake of the head, then red wine
Last October, Björk said the album was “made for people making clubs out of their living rooms at home during the Covid-induced lockdowns.” She described the album’s sound as “a man who bangs his head, then sits back down and drinks another glass of red wine – and by 10 p.m. everyone is back home, done dancing.” The artist also revealed that the new pieces mostly move between 80 and 90 beats per minute – the move with the same rhythm musician on foot.
