Bizarre statistics: Orange now three times in the top four of the most unsportsmanlike World Cup matches | Orange

It was just not as fierce as in 2006, when the Russian Valentin Ivanov drew yellow 20 times during the Netherlands – Portugal (0-1). But with 17 yellow cards – Denzel Dumfries even got two, so red – the spectacle of Orange against Argentina is in the top 3 of the most unsportsmanlike World Cup matches ever.

The Spaniard Antonio Mateu Lahoz threw seven players from the Orange and nine Argentinians on the receipt. Denzel Dumfries even got two. And then he saw a handball from Lionel Messi – who later got yellow for protesting – even through his fingers.

Mateu Lahoz’s performance caused quite a bit of irritation with both the Dutch and the Argentinians. ,,It was really scandalous”, said Frenkie de Jong after the match.

Although Louis van Gaal’s team received fewer cards than Argentina, the Dutch national team is again in a questionable list. The Orange was involved in three of the four World Cup matches with the most yellow cards.

The Netherlands – Argentina is one spot for the 2010 World Cup final. In the 1-0 loss against Spain, the Netherlands received ten yellow cards (including two for John Heitinga). Five players were checked with the Spaniards.

The absolute card record remains the duel that entered the books as ‘The Shame of Nürnberg’. The round of 16 of the 2006 World Cup against Portugal degenerated into a battle in which twenty cards were drawn. The Orange internationals Khalid Boulahrouz and Giovanni van Bronckhorst, just like the Portuguese Deco and Costinha, got yellow twice.

Second place is for Cameroon – Germany (0-2) in which a Spaniard, Antonio López Nieto, also claimed the leading role with 18 yellow cards.

World Cup matches with most cards

20 – Netherlands – Portugal (2006)
18 – Germany – Cameroon (2002)
17 – Netherlands – Argentina (2022)
15 – Netherlands – Spain (2010)
12 – Senegal – Uruguay (2002)
