Danish police have called on electric car owners in Denmark not to use a toaster to preheat the battery of their electric cars. This would be done to ensure the car performed as optimally as possible.
Most people who have studied electric cars know that electric cars perform best between 20 and 40 degrees Celsius. In extreme heat or cold, the range becomes much smaller. Car manufacturers therefore sometimes build in complex systems to maintain the battery temperature.
No parking heater
In the best case, you preheat the electric car with an integrated parking heater before starting the engine. But of course not every electric car has such a system. And so some owners of electric cars apparently use “smart” alternatives for preheating, such as a toaster.
That this is a bad idea is evident from the statement from the Danish police of Sydsjælland and Lolland-Falster. According to a spokesperson, an electric car recently burned out completely in the small town of Stenlille after the car’s owner used a toaster to preheat the battery, AP news agency reports.
Carport and nearby home damaged
Not only did the car catch fire, the carport was also severely damaged. The nearby house was also damaged by the heat development. No one was injured in the accident. Following the fire, the Danish police felt compelled to “strongly” discourage placing toasters under the batteries of electric cars. The owner of the burnt-out car can expect to be fined.
