Birding excursion from Zuidwolde to the Vreugderijkerwaard

Enthusiasts can join an excursion with Natuurvereniging Zuidwolde on Saturday 28 May. The Vreugderijkerwaard is located just west of Zwolle on the north bank of the river IJssel, opposite the town of Zalk on the other bank.

In the 97-hectare area, which is owned by Natuurmonumenten, there are river dunes up to five meters high and a secondary channel flowing with the IJssel. The floodplain is part of the IJsseldelta National Landscape designated by the national government.

For much of the year, the area is a resting place for migratory birds, such as lapwings, ruffs and black-tailed godwits. In winter, the inn is often populated by thousands of white-fronted geese. The marsh harrier finds its hunting ground in the reed land.

The excursion is a walk of about 5 kilometers through the area, a visit to the bird hide and is accompanied by a guide from Natuurmonumenten, duration about two hours.
