Bird flu diagnosed in Lunteren

Bird flu was diagnosed at a laying hen farm in Lunteren (municipality of Ede, province of Gelderland). To prevent the virus from spreading, the approximately 55,000 laying hens at the location are culled by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). Within a zone of 1 kilometer are 9 other poultry farms. 3 of them are empty. The other 6 are being removed as a precaution to prevent spreading to the surrounding companies. The companies are located in a poultry-dense area. If there is no preventive culling, there is a greater chance that the contamination will spread to surrounding companies in this area. Within 3 kilometres, there are 47 other poultry farms. These are screened for bird flu and intensively monitored over the next 14 days for symptoms that may indicate bird flu. There are 199 other poultry farms in the 10 kilometer zone.
