BioMedTec student conference 2023 in Lübeck

From March 1st to 3rd, 2023, the student conference took place for the twelfth time. This year, students from the master’s degree programs in Medical Engineering, Medical Informatics, Biomedical Engineering, Hearing Acoustics and Audiological Technology, Biophysics, Robotics and Autonomous Systems and Medical Microtechnology were there. After two years as an online event, the student conference took place again this year in person. 128 students from the University of Lübeck and the Technical University of Lübeck presented the results of their scientific practical projects to their fellow students and a jury of experts from science – a new participant record. At the industrial exhibition, the accompanying Recruiticon, which was organized by Infinite Science GmbH, the students took the opportunity to get in touch with future employers in an uncomplicated way.

“Over the last few years, the student conference has developed into a scientific conference whose content can compete with the annual conferences of the professional societies. The students have to apply with a so-called abstract, a kind of short version of their laboratory work,” explains Prof. Thorsten M. Buzug, head of the Medical Engineering course. “Then they mutually evaluated their four-page English-language specialist articles and made suggestions for improvement, which were taken into account by the authors. This so-called ‘peer review’ is an essential part of publications in specialist publishers, where you also have to face criticism and evaluation from specialist colleagues,” Buzug continues.

Prof. Heinz Handels, Head of the Medical Informatics course, Prof. Stefan Müller, Head of the Courses in Biomedical Engineering and Medical MicrotechnologyProf. Alfred Mertins, head of the course Hearing acoustics and audiological technology, Prof. Philipp Rostalski, head of the Robotics and Autonomous Systems course, and Prof. Christian Hübner, head of the Biophysics course, were together with Prof. Thorsten M. Buzug the scientific directors of the 2023 student conference. They were impressed by the high level of this entirely English-language conference. Together they honored the best posters and lectures:

Track A subject areas: Auditory Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Signal Processing, Sensor Data Analysis, E-Health, Safety and Quality
1st Lecture Prize: Christopher Schmale (Robotics and Autonomous Systems)
2nd lecture prize: Lucas Köllisch (medical engineering)

Track B subject areas: Biomedical Engineering, Machine Learning / AI, Medical Imaging, Image Processing
1st Lecture Prize: William Philipp (Medical Informatics)
2nd lecture prize: Moritz Friedrich Gerwin (robotics and autonomous systems)

Track C subject areas: Biomedical Engineering, Radio Technology and Locating, Medical Electronics, Biochemical Physics, Biomedical Optics
1st lecture prize: Mareen Mey (biophysics)
2nd lecture prize: Matthea Thielking (medical engineering)

1st poster prize: Gerrit Meußler (medical engineering)
2nd Poster Prize: Pranav Tej Gangavarapu (Robotics and Autonomous Systems)

The 2023 student conference was organized by the Institute for Medical Technology, the Institute for Medical Informatics, the Institute for Signal Processing, the Institute for Biophysics and the Institute for Medical Electrical Engineering at the University of Lübeck, as well as the Laboratory for Medical Sensor and Device Technology at the Technical University of Lübeck .
