Billions in investments for accessibility to residential areas throughout the Netherlands

In the coalition agreement, the cabinet has released 7.5 billion euros to make new residential areas accessible. Minister Harbers and State Secretary Heijnen (Infrastructure and Water Management) and Minister De Jonge (Public Housing and Spatial Planning) announced today how this money will be spent. They do this after consultation with provinces and municipalities, which also make a substantial financial contribution themselves. This concerns government investments in infrastructure for public transport (4 billion euros), the car (2.7 billion euros) and the bicycle (780 million euros). This concerns new railway lines, roads and bicycle paths, as well as the improvement and further development of existing connections. Part of the money will go to large infrastructure projects, and part to accelerating municipal and provincial mobility measures in new housing projects. There are many uncertainties, partly because of nitrogen. But the cabinet wants to continue working on the accessibility of the Netherlands. The aim is good accessibility and accessibility of 400,000 new homes to be built up to and including 2030. In all plans, the explicit choice has been made that housing construction and infrastructure will be realized much more hand in hand.
