In an interview with Vulture magazine Billie Joe Armstrong told us a little about his secrets and named his favorite Green Day song and album, among other things.

The singer says that he considers the ten-minute track “Jesus of Suburbia” from 2004 to be the best song they have ever recorded. “‘Jesus of Suburbia’ is the one that stands out. It’s so epic,” says Armstrong. “I mean, I’m praising myself now, but I think it encompasses so much about my life, my friendship and my family, and it’s flamboyant and big and bombastic. It’s one of those moments where I felt like I was taking a big risk. It’s so much fun playing it live and seeing the whole crowd sing along. It’s just one of those killer songs.”

“It was kind of a growing up”

The Green Day singer says his favorite album by the band is “Kerplunk” from 1991, because for him the record perfectly captures the sound of Green Day’s early years. Armstrong: It’s kind of autobiographical. We wrote the record when I was 18, 19 years old and it was at a time before punk became mainstream.”

He adds, “There’s something about it that feels like a fanzine. We’ve all lived together, lived together in bands. It was, in a way, coming of age. A song like ‘Welcome to Paradise’ wasn’t just about teenage heartbreak anymore. It had a lot more to do with life slapping you in the face.”
