Billie Jean King Cup in tennis: Germany reaches the final tournament

The German women’s tennis team qualified for the final tournament by beating Brazil on Saturday (April 15, 2023). Billie Jean King Cup qualified.

Anna-Lena Friedsam made the decision in the duel with Brazil. She won her match against Laura Pigossi 6:1, 6:0, for Germany it was the decisive third point in the fourth singles. The final double was therefore omitted.

“It’s unbelievable, yesterday it looked almost 2-0 and now we’re here 3-1 winners”Friedsam said a little later to the cheers of the German supporters in Stuttgart. “It was a golden day. Today I was so focused and I’m just happy with my performance.”

Friedsam showed a highly concentrated performance against the Brazilian number two from the start and repeatedly took the serve from the overwhelmed Pigossi. In the second round she also convinced with aggressive power tennis and brought home the easy win.

Match point after almost three hours – Niemeier submits

Previously, Julie Niemeier, the German number one, had her singles against the world number 14. Beatriz Haddad Maia won 7: 6 (7: 3), 3: 6, 6: 2 and thus justified the nomination of team boss Rainer Schüttler.

Schüttler had preferred Niemeier over Tatjana Maria, who was exhausted after her hard-fought three-set win against Laura Pigossi late on Friday evening and the tournament victory in Bogotá last week. Niemeier converted her first match point against Haddad Maia after a marathon match lasting almost three hours.

“I was very nervous. I’m very proud of myself and the team”said Niemeier. “We took the momentum from Friday with us.”

Second final round participation for Germany

The finals will take place from November 7th to 12th. The venue has not yet been determined. For Germany it is the second final round participation after 2021. At that time the selection of the German Tennis Association in Prague was eliminated after two defeats in the group phase.
