Bill Gates (66) is freeing up $ 20 billion for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to do more to solve the corona pandemic, the war in Ukraine and other global problems.
By: our news editorsThe foundation, one of the world’s largest charities, aims to spend $9 billion by 2026, said the multi-billionaire on Wednesday against CNN† That’s 50 percent more than before the pandemic when nearly $6 billion went to charities each year. The organization focuses on improving global health, gender equality and education.
Microsoft co-founder and ex-wife Melinda French-Gates have both pledged to donate the vast majority of their wealth to the foundation they co-founded 20 years ago—and other charitable programs.
The couple announced their separation in May 2021, but said they would work together as co-chairs for two years on a trial basis. At the end of the trial period, French-Gates can resign and receive a buyout from Gates, who will remain in charge of the foundation.
With an estimated net worth of approximately $114 billion, Bill Gates is now the fourth richest person in the world according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. Most of his assets are tied up in Microsoft stock. Gates wants change.
“I will go down on the list of the world’s richest people and eventually disappear from that list,” he wrote in a blog post on Wednesday. “It is my duty to give back my riches to society in ways that have the greatest impact to improve lives. I hope that others in positions of great wealth and privilege will also stand up at this time.”
