“Biggest asshole in the room”: Mavi Phoenix announces a new album with a video

The first single from the third album by Linz pop-rap-lo-fi phenomenon Mavi Phoenix has been released. “Biggest asshole in the room”, as it is titled, deals with recognizing that you are the problem in a relationship under the motto “Sometimes you’re the toxic one”.

The video also expresses the associated feeling. In an insulating plastic sphere, Mavi Phoenix floats alone on a lake. Sealed off in all directions, with a chainsaw as the only suggested way out, with no useful controls. Even the distortion-heavy sound, which leans even deeper into the atmosphere of the typical LoFi scratching, plays with the disorientation behind one’s own sense of guilt.

In an accompanying statement, the 27-year-old says that the song is an emotional and personal milestone. He also emphasizes that the problem often does not lie in recognizing one’s own mistakes. In addition to insight into personal patterns, it is a completely different matter “whether you really manage to change”.

Phoenix had already announced on January 26th that a new album was finished. Like the single, the record will be called BIGGEST ASSHOLE IN THE ROOM and will be released on May 19th. It looks like it will continue the introspective about love that defined 2022’s MARLON.

Most recently, in November 2022, “Snooze” was released, a song that was not heard on MARLON.
