Big winner of elections falls by the wayside when forming coalition Tynaarlo: ‘Puppet show’

Leefbaar Tynaarlo wants to forge a coalition with GroenLinks, PvdA, ChristenUnie and Municipal Interests. Remarkable is the absence of Tynaarlo Nu, the big winner of the last elections.

The advice of informateur Henk Berends (former alderman on behalf of the PvdA Tynaarlo) argues for a broad coalition. With five parties (together accounting for 13 of the 23 seats), this seems to be being followed. The parties would find each other in the search for a new meeting structure, as it became clear this morning during a press conference at the town hall in Vries.

Tynaarlo Nu party leader Richard Aeilkema did not hide his disappointment about Berends’ advice. He called the press conference, which did not last much longer than fifteen minutes, ‘a charade’. His party came out of nowhere with three seats, but now seems to have to settle for a place in the opposition.

Liveable Tynaarlo party leader Jurryt Vellinga believes that Tynaarlo Nu is not sidelined. “They will be on the council anyway, the highest organ of the municipality. Moreover, Tynaarlo Nu’s views do not differ much from ours, so they are best represented in the coalition.”

Municipal interests has indicated as the only possible coalition party that it does not have to supply an alderman. The intention is that the other parties will do so, which will increase the number of aldermen from five to four.

Informer Berends says that the coalition will focus on finances, as there are still areas for improvement. At the end of this week, Vellinga will speak with all parties in the council to see where their positions can be reconciled with a future coalition agreement. Vellinga has dropped the name of Henk Heijerman (alderman Aa and Hunze) as a possible formateur.
