Big difference in the number of heat waves between Drenthe and the rest of the country

A heat wave is measured at least twice as often in Drenthe than on the Frisian mainland, but compared to Limburg, our province is lagging behind. A heat wave has been registered eleven times this century at the KNMI weather station in Eelde, and ten times in Hoogeveen. For comparison: in Leeuwarden there are five, in Arcen in Limburg 25.

This is evident from figures from weather site Weeronline, which mapped the number of heat waves per region. The figures are from after the year 2000.

The regional differences between Dutch regions are considerable. For example, in Arcen (25) a heat wave is measured more often than in Drenthe, but also compared with the national weather station in De Bilt (13). Limburg’s Ell and Eindhoven are also outliers with 20 regional heat waves.

The coastal areas have hardly had to deal with heat waves this century. There were four in Vlissingen, three in IJmuiden and two in De Kooyook in North Holland. Since 2000, a heat wave has been measured ‘only’ once on Vlieland, Terschelling and the Frisian town of Stavoren.
