Big crash motorcycle racer Van den Goorbergh: ‘Biggest of my career’

Motorcyclist Zonta van den Goorbergh from Breda crashed during training sessions for the TT van Assen on Friday. The 17-year-old rider, who competes in the Moto2 class, crashed hard just after the Geert Timmer Bocht. While his bike bounced around, Van den Goorbergh lay on the ground, slipping a little further due to the speed.

He was just able to prevent the motorcycle from landing on him. Images show that the driver is standing upright almost immediately.

“It’s a bit strange. I felt fast, it went really well,” said the driver at Ziggo Sport after looking back at the images. Even after seeing the video, he does not understand what caused the crash on a straight between two corners. “It’s an unusual place to fall. It looks like the front end has a bump that lifts both wheels off the ground and that throws me off the bike.”

Despite the heavy crash, things are going well with the Breda native. “I still have shaky hands. It was one of the biggest crashes of my career,” said the 17-year-old motocross rider who has been riding since his youth.

Father Jurgen
Zonta is the son of Jurgen van den Goorbergh from Breda, the last Dutchman to cause a furore in the premier class of road racing. Zonta made his debut in Moto2 last year and was the youngest rider at the time. Last weekend, Van den Goorbergh finished eighteenth at the Grand Prix of Germany.
