The tallest stained glass window in Europe has been unveiled in the Grote Kerk in Alkmaar. The window, six meters wide and 23 meters high, consists of 48,000 pieces in 88 colors. Next Sunday everyone can see it in real life for the first time.
The window was designed by an artist Fiona Tan, and the glass is all mouth blown in Germany. The whole thing cost almost a million euros. Part of that money was raised by Alkmaar residents who sponsored a glass plate or even an entire panel.
The idea for the window arose in 2018 when the Grote Kerk 500th anniversary fourth. However, it was not possible to realize the window for that anniversary. The celebration of 450 years Alkmaar Relief turned out to be feasible.
The window can be visited for free in the church. To give as many people as possible the opportunity to see it, the Big church additionally opened. Located opposite the church Municipal Museum is an exhibition about how the window was made.
