It was anything but a football treat: In a tough game in the 2nd Bundesliga, Arminia Bielefeld and 1. FC Kaiserslautern played out a goalless draw on Saturday afternoon.

Bielefeld were clearly the more active team against extremely defensive guests for long stretches, but were rarely really dangerous. Kaiserslautern earned the point thanks to a good defensive performance, but the “Red Devils” made shockingly little progress.

Bielefeld at least got a point after three defeats in a row and remains in the lower midfield of the 2nd league. Kaiserslautern defended sixth place by winning points. Arminia coach Kniat looked with “one laughing eye and one crying eye” on the game. Ultimately the point could become important. “We wanted to show a different facet after the last two away games in which we conceded eight goals“, explained Kaiserslautern’s coach Lieberknecht.

Hardly any chances to score, Bielefeld’s Kersken and Lautern’s Ritter are arguing

Bielefeld’s coach Mitch Kniat had given his regular striker Joel Grodowski (seven goals this season) a break, and Noah Sarenren Bazee started for him as a center forward. Whether it was due to Grodowski’s absence or not, there wasn’t much of Arminia’s offense in the first half. The Bielefeld team were the more active team, recording almost 68 percent of the ball possession phases in the first half, but the DSC was hardly able to create any scoring chances against Lauterer, who defended deeply.

Because the guests were also extremely destructive and largely concentrated on a stable defense, a hard-fought second division game developed, but for the neutral spectators it was tough. Things got heated when Bielefeld’s goalkeeper Jonas Kersken and Kaiserslautern’s captain Marlon Ritter clashed, first with a shove and then verbally (17th minute). In terms of football, however, things remained poor: the teams only fired one shot at the opponent’s goal in the first 45 minutes.

Bielefeld’s Russo almost scores a dream goal from distance

The second half started the same way the first had ended: Bielefeld started without being dangerous, Kaiserslautern defended deeply. Nevertheless, Arminia became a little more compelling – especially from a distance. First, Marius Wörl’s 25-meter shot forced Kaiserlautern’s goalkeeper Julian Krahl to punch the ball towards a corner, and a little later Stefano Russo provided what was by far the biggest highlight of the game to date with his long-range shot that hit the crossbar (60′).

And what about Lautern? Coach Lieberknecht loudly influenced his players once or twice, but it took until the 65th minute of the game before things got tricky in front of the Bielefeld goal: After an initially blocked corner, Fabian Kunze brought the ball back into the center. Two Bielefeld players deflected so that the ball narrowly missed the far post.

Hope for the lucky punch

So more had happened in the second half than in the entire first half – and with the score even, the tension on the Bielefelder Alm was noticeable in the final minutes. Both coaches substituted offensive players in the hope of landing the lucky punch shortly before the end.

The hosts were closer – as they have been throughout the entire season. The crosses became more frequent and one or two standards sailed dangerously into the guests’ penalty area. The big drawback, however, remained the effectiveness: Bielefeld didn’t have a big chance for a long time. Krahl had to parry a powerful header from Joao Felix (85′), but the DSC couldn’t do more than that. And so it was fitting that it remained a goalless draw. It was Bielefeld’s first clean sheet since November 2024 (against Wiesbaden). But Kniat wasn’t unhappy about it: “It’s important that we kept a clean sheet.” That’s how Lieberknecht saw it: “We finally kept a clean sheet again.
