The US anticipates that it will make “specific announcements” about sending additional land, sea and air forces to Ukraine
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, will officially communicate this Tuesday to the head of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, an increase in the number of destroyers at the Rota naval base (Cádiz) from four to six to reinforce the military presence of his country and of NATO in the area.
This was announced on Tuesday by the White House National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, at a press conference on the plane that takes Biden on his way to Spain to attend the NATO summit.
Sullivan stressed that the measure will increase the maritime presence of the United States and NATO in all relevant maritime domains and that is part of a series of announcements that the US will make tomorrow, Wednesday, at the summit.
The National Security Adviser explained that at the meeting several countries will report on their commitments to reinforce the eastern flank of NATO and in that line the United States will make “specific announcements” about sending additional land, sea and air forces, for the duration of the conflict in Ukraine.
Biden is scheduled to meet with Pedro Sánchez as soon as he arrives in Madrid this Tuesday, from Germany, where he has participated in the G7 summit.
The US already announced in March that the Rota naval base was ready to receive two more destroyer ships, apart from the four that are currently there.
The main military commander of NATO and head of the US European Command (EUCOM), General Tod Wolters, indicated that the infrastructure was already prepared to host these two destroyers in an appearance before the Committee on Armed Services of the US Senate. for give explanations about the measures adopted against the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
