Biden warns North Korea: “Nuclear attack means end of your regime” | Abroad

US President Joe Biden warns North Korea not to launch a nuclear attack. Such an act would mean the end of the North Korean regime, he said during a press conference with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol at the White House.

The latter emphasized that peace with North Korea is only possible “with a show of force and deterrence”. Washington and Seoul therefore announced a new agreement. “If a nuclear attack follows, the US will immediately strike back overwhelmingly,” it says, among other things. Read: with nuclear weapons.

Seoul will also gain more insight into American planning and strategy and will be able to provide input for this itself. In return, South Korea has pledged not to develop a nuclear weapons program. The US government will send a nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine to South Korea for the first time since the 1980s.

Concern

Communist North Korea’s expanding missile arsenal and a possible imminent nuclear test are raising concerns. Biden’s offer to enter into negotiations has swept North Korea under the carpet so far.

More than a month ago, the North Korean leader called on his compatriots to be ready “at all times” to carry out a nuclear attack. Kim Jong-un holds the US and South Korea responsible for the rising tensions given their military exercises in the region.

Trump

Biden also took a closer look at Donald Trump, his closest competitor for the presidential election in 2024. “I’m not the only Democrat who can beat him. But I know him well and I know the danger he poses to our democracy,” he said.

Biden (80) is the oldest president in history to run for the White House again. At the end of a possible second term, he would be 86 years old. In 2020, Biden won the presidential election against then-President Trump. He has been president since 2021.

Biden believes that his age does not matter. “I still feel good. The coming years will determine what the next three to four decades will look like. I have never been so optimistic about the possibilities of the United States.”
