Biden responds to Finland joining NATO: “NATO has never been stronger” | War Ukraine and Russia

US President Joe Biden has called Finland’s NATO entry an “incredible gain” for the military alliance. “I don’t think NATO has ever been stronger,” he said during a meeting with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö in Helsinki.

According to Biden, the US and Finland share the same values. It therefore only took “three seconds” to agree to NATO membership of the Scandinavian country.

It seems people understand that we need to stay connected when things get serious.

Sauli Niinistö, President of Finland

In May 2022, Finland and Sweden applied for NATO membership. This happened in view of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. At the beginning of April, Finland became the 31st member of NATO. For the time being, Sweden has not yet received approval from Turkey and Hungary.

Niinistö, the Finnish president, said that Finland has entered a new era with its accession to NATO. He thanked the US for their support and praised Biden for bringing unity to the NATO summit in Lithuania. “It seems people understand that we need to stay connected when things get serious.”

After the NATO summit on Wednesday evening, Biden traveled on to Helsinki. It has been five years since Donald Trump’s visit since a US president traveled to Finland.

After the meeting with Niinistö, Biden was expected at a summit of northern countries. The heads of government of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland were also present there. Biden called for close cooperation to address the climate crisis, “the only existential threat facing humanity.” “We don’t have much time left, but if we keep working together, we will get through this,” Biden said.

Several Scandinavian countries are seen as pioneers when it comes to climate protection and renewable energy. For example, Denmark wants to reduce its emissions by an ambitious 70 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels.
