Bicycle accident in Veldegem turns out to be a case of road rage

The facts took place on Sunday afternoon along the Koningin Astridstraat in Veldegem, a sub-municipality of Zedelgem. A 72-year-old cyclist and his wife were overtaken by a man on a speed pedelec, which led to a discussion. During the subsequent pushing and pulling work, the victim ended up in the canal. The man in his seventies suffered life-threatening injuries.

Hit and run crime

The man with the speed pedelec did not stay on site, but could be identified and arrested in the meantime. The public prosecutor’s office decided to bring him before the Bruges investigating judge on suspicion of deliberate blows and injuries resulting in incapacity for work. The investigating judge ruled on Monday that the man should not go to prison. He will have to comply with some conditions in the coming months. He may have to answer to the criminal court at a later date.
