The Biathlon World Cup in Oberhof will be shortened from four to three competition days due to the difficult weather conditions and will start later than originally planned on this Friday.
This was announced by the IBU World Biathlon Federation. Too warm temperatures and rain made it difficult for the organizers in the Thuringian Forest to prepare for the first ski hunter competitions in the Olympic year in the past few days.
The men’s sprint should actually start on the Rennsteig this Thursday. As a result of the warm weather, the ten-kilometer competition will now be postponed to Friday (11.30 a.m.) and will take place just a few hours before the women’s race (2.15 p.m.).
This measure is intended to protect the routes and enable better preparation. In the course of the week it will be significantly colder at the first of two German home World Cups in succession and the temperatures will drop below freezing point in phases.
Corona rules tightened in the Biathlon World Cup
For the coming weekend, the mixed competitions (Saturday) and pursuit races (Sunday) are also planned on the World Cup routes from 2023.
Due to the tense Corona situation in Oberhof, spectators are not admitted for the second year in a row.
The IBU also announced that the corona rules will be tightened again compared to the previous weeks. Accordingly, all participants must, among other things, complete mandatory PCR tests.
