Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland support building homes for the homeless

Thanks to the two musicians, 31 permanent residential units are to be built in Houston.

Beyonce and Kelly Rowland have teamed up to create a major housing project for the homeless in Houston, Texas. The musicians, who had their breakthrough in the 2000s with their band Destiny’s Child, are both from Houston and have been active in the community for a long time.

Now, the Houston Chronicle is reporting that Knowles and Rowland will work together to create 31 permanent housing units for the homeless in Harris County. According to the local newspaper, district officials will use $7.2 million from the “American Rescue Plan” — the stimulus package passed by US President Joe Biden during the coronavirus pandemic. The ground-breaking ceremony for the project is scheduled for October of this year.

Judge Lina Hidalgo said in a news conference, “Harris County and the City of Houston, working with the Homeless Coalition, reduced the number of homeless people by 20 percent in the middle of the pandemic, and we’ve been able to maintain that reduction.” She added: “We just did another homeless census so it’s initiatives like this that I’ll definitely support no matter who is behind it, but I think it’s particularly interesting because there’s these names of Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland, who have of course been supporting the community for a very long time.”
