Yesterday in Coverciano the former Giallorossi player received notification of the investigation documents from the Turin Public Prosecutor’s Office which in the betting investigation included him, as well as Tonali and Fagioli, in the register of suspects on charges of “abusive exercise of gaming or betting activities” provided for in the art. 4 of law 401 of 1989. And already on this occasion, which was not a formal interrogation, the player admitted to having played blackjack on a portal that he did not know was illegal. Nothing else. A version that he has already reported to the sporting director of Aston Villa Monchi which would have reassured him: if things are really like this there is nothing really worrying. A simple bet on a site not authorized by the Customs and Monopolies Agency from a criminal point of view could lead to a fine. From the sporting point of view, the sanction could be practically nil, given that the Sports Justice Code in art. 24 limits itself to prohibiting the subjects of the federal system, therefore also the footballers, from the possibility of “making or accepting bets, directly or indirectly, even from the subjects authorized to receive them, which have as their object results relating to official matches organized in the within the FIGC, FIFA and UEFA”. However, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office will verify everything, also in light of the evidence collected yesterday by the agents who arrived in Coverciano after the seizure of mobile phones and tablets.
