Better care at Phusis op ‘t Ruige Veld, but the inspection continues to monitor

The Phusis Foundation has improved the care at ‘t Ruige Veld in Rolde, after a very inadequate care last March. But the healthcare provider is not there yet. There is still a lack of sufficient expert healthcare staff and ready knowledge about complex care and medication safety. “Steps still need to be taken,” the Health Care and Youth Inspectorate concludes after an unannounced inspection visit.

Last March, Phusis was visited by the inspectorate after two reports. The conclusion was that the care at ‘t Ruige Veld was considerably below par. The care team did not have enough qualified healthcare providers, there was no safe living environment, the hygiene in the buildings was not in order and the provision of medication was inconsistent.

The inspectorate then spoke of ‘risks’. The expertise of the care team was insufficient for the complex care needs of the group of clients. At ‘t Ruige Veld there are people with psychological or adjustment problems, the mentally handicapped and the mentally handicapped, and people with drug or alcohol addiction. Twelve clients live there. The daytime activities consist of cleaning, renovating furniture, maintaining a vegetable garden and caring for chickens

The inspection recommended a whole series of improvement measures. Phusis was given six months to do this. In October, the inspectorate took another look at ‘t Ruige Veld to see whether the care was now good and safe enough. The inspection then saw ‘a more stable care team and a cleaner home environment’. There is also a better daily routine and structure for the clients.

However, there are still concerns about the short training time for new healthcare providers and students. Phusis must also keep better records of clients. And it must do more to train and develop staff, especially in the areas of medication safety and involuntary care. “Phusis has made a good start at ‘t Ruige Veld, but is not there yet,” is the opinion. The inspectorate calls the situation ‘vulnerable’ and continues to closely monitor the improvement process.

Yesterday it was announced that Phusis, with its location in Hoogersmilde, has come under increased supervision. According to the inspection, there are all kinds of shortcomings at the care farm on Bosweg, where clients live and work. This location also concerns insufficient expert staff, hygiene and medication safety.

Last March, the inspectorate visited the care location for the first time, just like in Rolde, and again in October. Improvements appeared to have been insufficiently implemented in Hoogersmilde. The healthcare institution now has until June 11.
