Betis Sevilla have won the Spanish Football Cup for the third time in club history. In a thrilling final at the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville, coach Manuel Pellegrini’s team beat FC Valencia 5-4 on penalties. After extra time it was 1-1 (1-1, 1-1).
Juan Miranda converted the decisive penalty after Yunus Musah had missed for Valencia. Betis, who failed in the round of 16 at Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League, celebrated their first cup win since 2005.
In the first half, Betis had more of the game and consequently took the lead early on. Borja Iglesias headed in from close range (11′). In the middle of the first half, striker Hugo Duro scored to equalize Valencia 1-1 (30′).
Betis was not deterred by the somewhat surprising goal and pressed for the renewed lead, but captain Sergio Canales hit the post just before the break (44th).
The second half was a balanced picture for a long time. In the final phase, Betis pushed again, Juanmi hit the post again from 17 meters. Five minutes later, France international Nabil Fekir had a free shot but missed the goal. Valencia were lucky at this stage.
